A famous aristocratic family of Central Travancore, the Koyikkaleth Tharavad is located in the Pallipad village near Haripad in the Alappuzha district. Ancestors hail from Edappally near Kochi. They lived initially in Kannankara house at Kumarapuram near Haripad. A family temple dedicated to the goddess was built in the nearby Mundolil homestead.
The family settled in Koyikkaleth when a family member, Kochusankara Pillai, was a High Court judge in Travancore. He later becomes the Diwan Peshkar of Travancore. Kochusankara Pillai served as Dewan Peshkar between 1829 and 1846 during the reign of Swathi Thirunal Maharaja.
The Koyikkaleth family had immeasurable properties including villages and fields. There were acres of coconut groves in Konni and Thrikunnapuzha.
Koyikkaleth Tharavad was a large complex consisting of an “ETTUKETTU“ , “Padipura Malika“, two “NALLUKETTU” and Arayakulangara Srikrishna Swamy temple for family members to worship. There were stables of elephants and horses in the fields adjacent to the palace. This family home on the shores of Achankovilar had a large boat shed and provision for feeding all the boaters.
Koyikkaleth is a name that is mentioned even today in connection with many events in Kerala history. This family home also has the reputation of being the matrimonial home of the famous writer CV Raman Pillai.
Today a modern house stands in place of the old family home. Adjacent to it, Arayakulangara Temple, adorned with centuries-old mural paintings, stands as a testament to the glory of Tharavad.
